INFORMATION
General description
They are solitary, it is nocturnal and during the day it sleeps in the bushes or hollows of the trees.
The facial veil is light gray with dark rings fringed with white and brown feathers.
The upper part is brownish-gray with dark spots, with white-bordered wings.
The bottom is cream colored.
The legs are fully feathered.
The iris is yellow.
The bill is greenish-yellow with a cream-colored spot.
Young birds are grey, buffy above and cream below, their chest is tan with a dark pattern.
Habitat
They live in the interior and on the edges of deciduous and evergreen forests.
(less numerous in the latter), savannahs with scattered trees, secondary forests and mangroves.
Diet
Mainly rodents. It feeds on voles and other rodents, such as lemmings, deer mice, and pocket mice. It also feeds on shrews, rabbits, gophers and some bats and muskrats.
Eats birds, especially in coastal regions.
